The present study investigates the role of "legitimacy" in Ma'mun's governance. It implements Fairclough's critical discourse approach and uses library sources to examine the background and causes of the proposal of the velayat Ahedi to Imam Reza (AS). It analyses the discourse of the two involved parties in the conflict between Ma'mun and Imam Reza (AS). It interprets and explains the events with an analytical-critical approach in the historical period leading to the Velayat Ahdei of Imam Reza (AS). It was revealed that Ma'mun tried to change the center of gravity of legitimacy by adding another side to his rule. He attempted to disturb the balance of power on both sides in his favor. His attempt to take advantage of the potential of the Alavids and their leader, Imam Reza (AS), who was popular, legitimate, and acceptable among Muslims, was a government strategy to solve the "legitimacy crisis" caused by the assassination of the established caliph.
