The Ineffectiveness of the Astronomical Propositions of the Qur'an from the Ptolemaic System

Abstract:   (949 Views)
A group of Muslim dissidents and contemporary orientalists consider the Qur'an as a historical text that spoke to the people in accordance with the needs, abilities and level of simple thought of the age of descent. Based on this point of view, it cannot be accepted that the Qur'an spoke about civilization-building astronomical issues to the audiences who were ignorant of the astronomical realities and who viewed the world through the lens of the Ptolemaic system. Referring to the views of the advanced commentators and also the incorrect interpretation of some Quranic interpretations, they believe that the Quran, influenced by the Ptolemaic system, presents a layered image of the heavens, to which the heavenly bodies are connected and move according to it. The studies of the history of science and the use of the interdisciplinary method reveal that the talk of the seven heavens, the movement of the earth and celestial bodies and many astronomical facts in the Qur'an, in addition to explaining the illusoryness of the idea of influence, reveals the attempt of this divine text to correct some of the scientific errors and clarifies the foundation of Islamic civilization in the science of astronomy.
Keywords: Quran, Ptolemaic System, Seven Heavens, Astronomical Civilization, Culture.
