From the beginning of the Islamic era, preaching has been one of the most effective forms of transmitting Islamic teachings. By using various preaching methods, using literary arrays and using various topics, the preachers used to hold their sermons with great appeal and attracted different strata of people and rulers and gained increasing fame. This article, using the descriptive-analytical method, examines the dimensions of preaching in terms of types, methods and forms of preaching up to the 6th century and then reveals what the concepts related to preaching were connected or different from each other. The findings indicate that preaching should be examined in two general and specific concepts, its general concept existed from the very beginning of Islam and appeared in various formats such as reading stories, dhikr, khutbah reading, etc. But in a special sense, preaching and consequently, professional preachers nicknamed as "preacher" appeared in the middle of the 3rd century AH and were added to the etiquette of preaching until the 6th century AH.
