کتیبه‌های مدارس عصر صفویه به مثابه رسانه‌های نمادین هنر شیعی نمونه موردی: مسجد-مدرسه چهارباغ اصفهان

Chaharbag mosque-school is considered as one of the prominent scientific-religious monuments in Safavid era and it is particularly significant from Islamic inscription art's point of view. The present study is an attempt to study the symbolic performance of inscriptions contained within this monument by applying a content-analysis approach. The researcher tries to find the answer to the main research question, i.e. first, how was the place of symbolic performance of inscriptions contained within Chaharbagh mosque-school and second, what's the most important symbolic message reflected in these inscriptions besides conveying message? Considering the research objectives, this research is developmental and from methodological point of view, it is descriptive-analytical. The data for this study were gathered through field studies and library search. Descriptive methods were used to analyze the data for this study. Also, the population for this study was chosen using randomized selection methods. The results of present study show that considering the range of existing themes, the nature and the historical age of this monument, these inscriptions are significant as symbolic media. Furthermore, these inscriptions can effectively convey message. They are capable of conveying the interaction among Shia religion, belief foundation and the dominant religious politics in Safavid era. In fact the researcher conveyed his own intended messages to the audience through creation of these inscriptions. Accordingly, the most important messages conveyed in these artistic works include religious sayings and various narrations regarding wisdom and virtue, succession and caliphate, imamate and elaboration on superior characteristics of Imam Ali as the main emblem of Shiite art. In fact these inscriptions are mainly descriptive of Islamic and Shia religious politics, focusing on Imamate and making Imam Ali's personality a model and praising and admiring him.
